MOKORO TRIPS
Explore the exquisitely beautiful waterways of the world-famous Okavango Delta by mokoro, the Setswana name for a canoe. This is the way navigation was conducted in this pristine wilderness, long before motor boats arrived on the scene. Knowledgeable local guides will pole your mokoro as you silently glide past elephants, hippos, crocodiles, zebra and a host of other game animals and myriads of birds. Here you may truly feel at one with nature. Combine mokoro trips with professionally guided walks on exotic palm-fringed islands. Bona Safari Services can arrange morning, afternoon or full day trips from permanent camps or lodges or trips of varying duration camping out “in the wilds” on one of the many islands in the Delta.
Mokoro trips may be undertaken as complete trips in themselves, or in combination with other safaris and activities.
GUIDED WALKS
One of the most enjoyable ways to experience nature, and to really feel at one with it, is to see it by foot. Professionally guided walking safaris bring you intimately in touch with flora and fauna. Approaching animals on foot, be they massive bull elephants or warthogs, is a challenging and absorbing experience totally different from any other.
Experienced guides will share with you their knowledge and passion of the bush. Walks are conducted at several localities in and around the Okavango Delta, and in the forests near Kasane, next to Chobe National Park.
For this experience you need:
- comfortable hiking shoes and a hat
- (ideally) a pair of binoculars
- to carry sufficient drinking water.
Walking safaris, usually of 2 – 3 hours duration, may be combined with other activities, such as game drives, boat trips, fishing, etc.
BOATING
Viewing game by boat is a thoroughly enjoyable experience and a motorboat trip on the Chobe River is a must. Great numbers of big game, especially elephant, buffalo, hippo, various antelopes and often giraffes, may be seen in the picturesque setting of the banks of this wildlife paradise. Elephants, especially from July to October, are often seen in staggering numbers, some drinking, some browsing or tearing up trunksful of grass, others bathing and swimming in the water. It is possible to glide up close to hippos slumbering in the shallows, or to crocodiles sunbathing on a sandbank. And the bird viewing along the river is truly remarkable with a great variety of species all year round.
Some camps in the Okavango Delta also offer motor-boat trips, and these, too, provide superb views of wildlife and the unique habitat there.
QUAD BIKES
Travel across the massive open expanse of the Kalahari adjacent to the Makgadikgadi Pans in 4-wheel motor-bikes known as “quad bikes”. Knowledgeable guides will take you through this supreme wilderness and ensure you don’t get disorientated in the flatlands and will bring you back to the comforts of camp. The endless vistas of sand, palms, scrub and pans will touch your soul, as will the game animals that inhabit the Kalahari – desert-adapted antelopes, jackals, large felines, zebras, wildebeests, brown hyaenas, giraffes to name some of them.
You may combine a quad biking trip with a general game viewing safari elsewhere in the country.
SCENIC FLIGHTS OVER THE OKAVANGO DELTA
The best way to really appreciate how the channels, lagoons, islands and floodplains of the 15 000 km² Okavango Delta fit together in one breathtaking mosaic is from the air. Scenic flights in light aircraft for this purpose, usually lasting one hour, but longer by special request, provide spectacular, unforgettable views of this marvel of nature. Normal passenger seating capacity of these small planes is 5. Best time to fly is early in the morning or late in the afternoon. There is a good chance of seeing an array of big game (elephant, buffalo, hippo, giraffe, zebra, antelopes, etc.) from the air.
There is also based in Maun a helicopter which may be hired to take you on a scenic and game-viewing flight over the Delta. This is a more costly option than a fixed-wing aircraft, but it provides better views.
